The stars
Vast blanket with pinpricks of Light
Ballerinas dancing beyond my sight
Lonely, these endless Stars, they seem to be
Cover'd and shadowed by Clouds of their sea
How ambitious Man is to attempt to find
The Mystery of the Night, Subconscious of the Mind
Regal and luminescent, why is it so
That we must discover all there is to know?
This poem is about the night sky and the loneliness that it evokes in the narrator. The comforts of the stars are just beyond his grasp, but he feels a sense of kinship with them because they also appear lonely, at the mercy of great distances and changing weather. He feels like he can't see the stars except in his peripheral vision. If he tries to confront them, they flit away and he is left with darkness. Perhaps this represents his personal life as well.
In the second verse, the narrator laments Man's ambition to take away any mystery in the world. He feels that secrecy adds to the value of the natural world. In his perspective, staring up at the unreachable heavens, the unknown is not to be feared, but rather treasured. This is contrary to typical beliefs. From the earliest of times, humanity is determined to find out everything about everything - from galaxies to what guides the subconscious mind.
